Update on Shirley October 14
Hello,
Mom moved rooms today it is called a Transition Room. The room is set up like a mini apartment. She is room 3801 her number is 405-307-3801 they are stilling planning on her going home Saturday. She is doing great. Thanks to everyone that said prayers for her during this time. Me and the family would like everyone to know we appreciate everything you did for us. My family could not make it though this time without everyone that express interest in her care.

Just got a call from Mom she broke her record in walking today. She walked 150 feet and no longer has to have the leg brace on. Yea for her!!!!!

Update on Shirley October 8
Hello,
Mom is doing good with therapy. She looked good yesterday. They had their meeting with the doctor and the therapists at the Rehab center yesterday the discharge date is October 21st and that date is not set in stone. She could get discharged earlier then that just depends on how she does the rest of this week and next.

Hello,
Went to see mom yesterday she is good. Nothing new to report. Dad and I helped get ready for bed etc... she did great. Did almost everything by herself. She is ready to be out of there so i told her to keep working hard in therapy.

Update on Shirley October 1
Hello,
Mom is about the same. She had to have 2 units of blood yesterday none today that is good. The Dr was in this AM while i was there he said "Her knee looked good" He wrote a consult for the Social Worker to come in and talk to her about Rehab. She can not go to Rehab there @ Norman Regional because she has to have 6 weeks of IV therapy they will only do 2 weeks of IV therapy if she went home then Home Health therapy would only come out 45 minutes every 3 days that is not an option. Mom needs therapy everyday of the week because she is so weak right now. The option that is left is back to Kindred Hospital South OKC for IV and physical therapy. The lady from Kindred did not come out today to evaluated her that i know of if i had to take a guess on when she will be going there i suspected it would be somtime next week.

Hello,
Mom's surgery went well. The doctor replaced 2 parts that were bad from her previous knee surgery and he cleaned out her knee again really good. She will have to be on IV antibiotics for 6 weeks to make sure no more infection comes back. He said on Saturday when he drained the fluid it was very cloudy compared to July when he drained. He said the fluid around her knee was infected not any of the bones that is good. He is hoping he can get her home before the 6 weeks are up to finish out the IV therapy and the Physical therapy. He said he will make sure her knee is doing good before he sends her out and he will also make sure all the other doctor's involved with her care are all on board with her going home. I am praying that this is the end of the roller coaster ride she has been this go around and she can finally go home.

Hello,
Mom had to get 2units of blood today because her blood level is low. She called me a few minutes ago and she has to get 3 more units of blood plus 2 units of platelets. She is good spirits about everything that is going on. She is suppose to go back into to surgery soon to have that part replaced on her knee and for the DR to go in replace something that he put in on Sunday. Just continue prayers that is last thing for her and she can come home soon.

Update on Shirley September 27 Part 2
Here is a message from Dad:
Been with Shirley all day. The surgeon irrigated her knee. She has the tube s attached, one for fluids in and a second for sucking the fliud out of her knee. The doctor wants to go back in on Tuesday or Wednesday and replace parts on her knee replacement.

Hello,
Mom started having problem with her knee again the other day. They did some x-ray's of it then consulted an orthopedic doctor. He drained some fluid out of her knee and he said it looked "cloudy" so he took to the OR to clean out the infection. She has moved rooms again she is in room 4918 her number is 405-307-4918. I have not seen her yet when i do i will send out another update.

Hello,
Today was a better day for mom. She got up in the wheelchair w/therapy did her exercises and got a shower that made her feel so much better. She looked better and whole her attitude was better. She ate today. All around today was a good day for her and I. Thank you all you called her and who are going to see her soon.

Update on Shirley September 23
Hello,
Well mom's first day on Rehab did not go so well. She was having problems with her wound/ostomy bag the wound nurse had to come visit her 2 times to fix it, she does not want to be there she wants to be at home. She cried the whole time i was in there talking to her telling her this is just one more hurdle she has to cross before she gets home. I told her to go ahead and cry hoping that will help and get it all out of her system. I had a talk with the nurse about medication, her history etc....
When i went there this evening there was another problem her restless legs has flared up so again i had to talk with the nurse about her medication for that and if she does not get her something for it she will have a very bad night. I was not a very nice person. I want the nurse to get something now not later. I want mom to benefit from rehab so she can get home.The nurse called the doctor and he ordered her medicine so i hope she gets some sleep tonight. Here is her address if any would like to send her a card she really could use some cheering up right now. She is really down in the dumps.

Hello,

Update on Shirley September 21
Hello,
Mom is not moving to rehab anytime soon. The surgeon came in today and said "her blood count has dropped again he is not sure why". He is wanting her GI doctor do to a scope of her stomach to see if he can see if there is anything going on there. I talked with the nurse do see if the surgeon ordered any test for the morning but he did not. The nurse thinks he is going to wait to see what her blood count is in the morning go from there. My guess is she will probably need blood again tomorrow we will see. When i know more i will let everyone know. She was upset this evening she is so tired of being in a hospital setting. She was hoping going to rehab would be one step closer to going home. Just continue prayers for her.

Hello,
Mom is doing better she walked in the hallway with therapy to the nurse station. That is a way from where here room is that was great. They had to push her back to her room in a chair but that is OK at least she is walking. The doctor made a request for the Rehab at Norman Regional Hospital to come and evaluate her if that falls though ( i hope it does not) then they are going to ask Jim Thorpe Rehab to come and do an evaluation on her. She is moving right a long. She is ready to come home.

Hello,
Mom got 1 unit of blood today. She sat up in the chair for a long period of time today. Walked a little with physical therapy in her room. She is doing so much better. It looks like the bleeding is under control in fact i think it has stopped. Each day i think she is getting a little stronger. Her heart rate is back to normal it was high in the ER but that was due to the bleeding.

September 15 Update on Shirley Part 2
Hello All,
Mom looks better today. They took her trach out at Kindred yesterday i forgot to post that to the early blog. I think they got the bleeding to stop. The stomach doctor wants to keep her out of the operating room they are treating her conservatively right now but if she starts bleeding a lot again then possible back to the operating room. I personal do not think that will happen. When i have been in there today it looks like the bleeding is slowed way down compared to last night. The surgeon came in to see her not sure what he said mom did not say. I told mom last night "this is just a bump in the road".

Mom is back in Norman Hospital Room 4071 she started having problems with that wound/ostomy she is bleeding from it. They did a Cat Scan of her abdomen, admitted her, was going to give her platelets and stop her of her blood thinners. The surgeon is going to come see her this AM along with her primary care Doctor and the stomach doctor. I am not sure of the CT Scan results the ER doctor did not tell us. September 13 Update on Shirley
Hello,
Went to see mom today she looked good. I think each day she is improving. Her heart rate was down in the 80's and oxygen level straying in the 90's she is still on oxygen. They have started her on something for joint pain that should help her. We all went up to see her for belated birthday cake. Johnny and Jenna were in town this weekend they spend sometime with mom. She enjoyed all of us been there with her. She still has her trach in the doctor has been out of town so maybe this week that will happen. There is really nothing new to report.

Update on Shirley September 11
Hello,
Went to see mom Wednesday and Friday of this week She looks better tonight (Friday) then she did on Wednesday when i went to see her. Her heart rate is about the same running in the 99-100 range her oxygen level is staying between 90%-100% but she is still on 5 liters of oxygen. She was more talkative tonight then on Wednesday night. She is slowly getting better just needs continue prayers. My brother Jeryl came up to see her tonight. She was excited to see him.

Update on Shirley September 7
Hello,
I have been out of town for a few days so today i went to see mom. She is doing good. The respiratory therapist said today " her lungs sound the best they ever have since she has been there" that is good news. They are going to pull her trach sometime this week and she has a staph infection in her trach so she is back on antibiotics again. According to the doctor is a small one (if there is such a thing as a small staph infection) the respiratory therapist did some type on mouth rinse that is suppose to kill any germs that might be in her mouth. He said "they use it for people who have artificial airways like trach's" he did that while i was there visiting. Her heart rate was good low 100's a lot better then it has been. Her oxygen level was good to between 95%-97% that is good for mom still on oxygen. She had just got back into bed when i arrived she sat up for about 30 minutes today in the chair. Just continue prayers for her.

Went and saw mom yesterday evening she looked good. They started physical therapy on her and changed her trach out to a smaller one. She was tired when i went to see her she was saying "her joints hurt" she was coughing a lot but was able to suction the stuff out of her mouth on her own. I think her respiratory issue will get better as she gets stronger. Just continue prayers that she can get stronger and come home.
Jason got some of his pride band members to come up to the hospital last night and play a few OU tones for her since she is not able to make to the game she like it. The hospital staff loved it they were in there taking pictures of the band members and mom. They had there cell phones out they were either recording the music or someone was listening on the other end. It was great.

Well Mom had a rough first night there on Tuesday she had respiratory issues again. They were right on top of it according to the respiratory therapist i talk to yesterday morning. Dad sat with her all day on Wednesday he meet the doctor and her case worker. I went up last night to visit she was doing better her heart rate was higher then it had been but that happened last time she had this problem. Just continue prayers that as she gets stronger this respiratory issue will get better.
If anyone is wanting to go visit her the hours are 8am-10pm.

Sat w/ Mom this AM she was doing well. I shampooed her hair today and gave her a bath she felt better after that. They found and LTAC facility covered under Dad's insurance so they are starting that process again. I do not know the results of the Echocardiogram her doctor is not on this weekend so i will ask about that this week. I finally got a list of her medication. Ubdate on Shirley August 27th
Hello,
Mom is not on the BIPAP anymore that was only for Tuesday's night problem. She is actually felling better tonight she told me. She wanted a little snack. One of her friends bought her up a big box full of food and mom wanted one of the muffins out of there she ate all of it. Had a good dinner ate most of it. Her heart rate was good down to the high 80's to low 90's. She sat up in the chair for a little bit this afternoon. They did another Echocardiogram: Ultrasound of her heart we do not know those results yet. Dad stayed with her last night no one is staying the night tonight so hopeful things go well tonight with her.

Update on Shirley August 26
Hello,
Well, mom had a bad night last night got into some respiratory problems. She was having a hard time breathing so they put her back on BIPAP which is:BiPAP stands for Bi-level Positive Airway Pressure. It is a breathing apparatus that helps people get more air into their lungs. We are back to reading her lips again she is not able to talk right now. I am not sure how long they will keep her on the BIPAP they did some test on her last night everything was OK the DR came in to talk to me he was really trying to keep her out of ICU if she got bad again during the night he was going to put her back in but she did fine. I stayed with her last night did not get much rest because i was afraid if i went into a deep sleep i would not hear her. I slept of and on. He started her back on IV fluids and an antibiotic. Just continue prayers for her.

She was having a hard time breathing so they put her back on BIPAP which is:BiPAP stands for Bi-level Positive Airway Pressure. It is a breathing apparatus that helps people get more air into their lungs. We are back to reading her lips again she is not able to talk right now. I am not sure how long they will keep her on the BIPAP they did some test on her last night everything was OK the DR came in to talk to me he was really trying to keep her out of ICU if she got bad again during the night he was going to put her back in but she did fine. I stayed with her last night did not get much rest because i was afraid if i went into a deep sleep i would not hear her. I slept of and on. He started her back on IV fluids and an antibiotic. Just continue prayers for her.

Update on Shirley August 24
Hello,
Mom is doing a little better. They changed her diet today so hopefully that will help with her food choices and she may eat more we will see. The respiratory person changed out her cap on her trach today and switch her to oxygen in her nose. Her oxygen sats were dropping with what she was on so he is trying this to see if that helps keep her oxygen levels up. She had a rough night the first night she was in PCU so she slept most of the day yesterday. She said she had a good night sleep last night she was awake most of the day today. The physical therapist gave her a squeeze thing for her hands to build the strength back up in them. She did well in therapy she said "it hurts" I told her that was a good thing. Today was a good day for her.

August 21 Update on Shirley
Hello,
Mom was very aggagted today she wanted to leave the hospital and go back to the Speaclity Hospital like "NOW" the social worker woorked on trying to get her moved if possible. The outcome is she is not going anywhere because Dad's insurance does not have any contracts with any LTAC facilities only either skilled or rehab facilities. I found out tonight that she is still on the CPAP at night so after yesterday's insurance deal the plan for her now is to wean her of the vent at night so she can be moved to a different room for a while then moved to a rehab facility for strenghting. Last night Dad and I went back up at 9pm to sit with her and she told us "She was glad she was there" I was happy to here that. She was much better in the afternoon once they had a plan of action and she knows she will be getting out of ICU. She really just wants to be in a room where there is a phone and Shianne can come see her. She is missing Shianne so bad. Just continue prayers for her as soon as she is a different room i will let everyone know so people can send her stuff.

August 20th Update on Shirley
Hello,
Mom was tired today but she still did things they asked of her. When i got there this evening she was up in a chair had been there for about an hour. When they put her back in bed she was wore out. She asked me " to stay then night with her" i told her"when she gets to her new place i will stay with her one night" They are keeping the cap in her trach all day long now she can talk to us whenever she wants. Still on flow by oxygen during the day not sure if at night they put her back on CPAP that is a question i need to ask. Still no word on when she is moving insurance is still holding the move up.

August 19 Update on Shirley
Hello,
They kept the cap on her trach all day today so she was able to talk to us all day. She had a OK day but a bit tired today. They stopped the continues tube feeding and started her on food. It is chopped up food she did not eat much of it today. I would not except her to have eating a lot because it has been more then 2 months she has had anything to eat. They are giving her bolus of tube feeding if she eats less then 50% of her meals. She passed the Dysphagiagram that she had done yesterday. Still no idea when she is being moved back to the Speciality Hospital.

August 18 Update on Shirley
Hello,
Mom had a good day today they put that cap back on her trach so my Aunt Diane and I got to talk to her for a little bit this morning. She had a Dysphagiagram today that is an x-ray of the throat to make sure liquids are going to her stomach and not her lungs. I do not know the results of the test I will ask tomorrow when i see the nurse. Still not sure on when she is moving insurance is the hold up right now. I did not go after work today we had Back to School night for Shianne. I did talk to my Aunt that was there until 1pm and Dad he was there from 430pm-6pm and she was doing fine. Mom wanted to rest so Dad went on home for the evening.

August 17 Update on Shirley Part 2
Hello,
Mom had her Swallow test today and past not sure what that means in terms of food and water we will see what will come of that. They had Mom on just oxygen all day today then they put a cap on her trach she was able to talk to us for a bit. When I went to visit her after work the cap was gone Dad said " All the talking she did wore her out" the nurse took the cap off so she could rest. Some point this week she is going to be moving back to the Speciality Hospital on Robinson. Dad and I talk to her a length about what happened there but she has no memory of what took place. She is insisting about going back she bought up so good points that I could not argue with. I voiced my concerns to the social worker maybe we can get things straightened out on the front end before she goes back. Will let you know when she moves she will probably not be able to talk on the phone at first until they can keep that cap in for a while will let you know when she is able to have phone calls. She had a good day today heart rate was still the same but all of the other vital signs are good. She felt much better after her bath she said. I know each and everyone of you are praying for her just keep them coming. Thank you all for everything you have done for mom.

Went to see mom yesterday she is still the same. Trying to talk to us but i am getting better at what she is saying. Her heart rate was good. She slept most of the time Dad and I were there. They are going to do a Swallow Study on her today the speech therapist performs it in her room. They give her different kinds of food consistency see if she starts to cough with the different type s of food for example: They will give her a thin consistency of food if she coughs then she might need something called thickener added to her drinks until her throat can handle thin liquids. August 15 Update on Shirley
Hello,
There is really nothing new to report on mom. She is doing the same still trying to talk to us. I am getting better at understanding her that is a plus. She was off the ventilator all day yesterday just on the oxygen to the trachea but today they had her on the ventilator with CPAP (where it gives her support while she is breathing on her own). The respiratory therapist said tomorrow they are going to try to put a cap on her trachea that way she can talk. Her voice will be a little a horse at first but then it will get better. She wants to come home so bad she keeps asking us to take her home. She wanted the nurse to give her the paperwork to sign to be discharged from the hospital. We keep telling her that she can not come home right now because she still has all the machines hooked up to her. She gets agitated with us because we tell her she can not come home right now. She tired to write today but she still does not have the strength to hold the pen in her hand to write. We tell her that she is getting better everyday. Keep the prayers coming.

August 13th Update on Shirley
Hello,
Well they did that TEE today did not show any infection which is good. Her heart rate is lower then it has been. They had her on the vent all day today due to the test they were going to run on her the doctor that it would be best for her not to be off the vent all day so her body would not be stressed out when they did the TEE. We still can not read her lips. The speech therapist thinks in a couple of days they will be able to cap her trach and then she will be able to talk to us. Still no answer on where the infection is at she was running a low grade fever this morning. She still need coutinue prayers.

Update on Mom
Here is the latest on Shirley:
She was off the vent for 8 hours today with her just receiving oxygen. She is trying to talk to us but we are not able to understand what she is saying. I try to read her lips and at times i get what she is talking about but there are other times that i do not. She gets frustrated with us because we do not understand her. On Monday she spiked a high fever they did a Cat Scan of her head,chest and abdomen the only thing the scan showed was that there was some spots in her chest that looks like infection the doctor ordered a TEE it takes pictures of the heart and the valves around it. I hope tomorrow we will know if this is where the infection is coming from. She still needs continue prayers.
